Born in Kansas City, Kansas and reared in Beatrice, Alabama, Dr. Tyrone T. Davis was licensed to preach in 1963 at the New Purchase CME Church in Beatrice after having preached his trial sermon at the age of 13.
He graduated valedictorian of his High School class in Beatrice, Alabama and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH). He earned the Master of Divinity degree in Homiletics from the Lexington Theological Seminary (Lexington, KY) and the Doctor of Ministry degree from the Memphis Theological Seminary (Memphis, TN) with a project entitled "Render Unto Caesar ..."
Ordained a Deacon in August 1970 and an Elder in September 1970, he was admitted into full connection as a member of the Ohio Conference in August 1971. During the past 53 years, he has served as pastor of ten congregations in five Episcopal districts. Additionally, he served as Administrative Coordinator at the Connectional level of the CME Church (1982-1986) and as an Executive Director of an Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) in Lexington, Kentucky (a self-help program).
Recognized for his skills in nonprofit and religious based accounting procedures, Dr. Davis is a sought-after workshop presenter and special projects consultant. He served 12 years as Chief Financial Officer of the Congress of National Black Churches in Washington, DC during which time he managed an annual budget that grew from $1 million to $6 million. For 10 years, he served as a faculty facilitator at the Institute for Church Administration and Management in Atlanta, GA where he conducted workshops on “Fiscal Accountability & Budgeting” and “Helpful Hints on Interpreting Financial Statements” for denominational leaders, pastors, lay persons and seminary students.
Unanimously elected to a 4th 4-year term in 2014, Dr. Davis currently serves as General Secretary of the General Board of Personnel Services of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with responsibility for the denomination’s $30 million Retirement and Pension Plan and $250 million Fire & Casualty Insurance program. Dr. Davis is currently licensed as a Life, Health and Accident insurance agent in the states of Tennessee and Texas and a property and casualty insurance agent in the state of Tennessee. As a connectional leader in the CME Church he served eight years as the Director of the Annual Convocation and since 2012 he has served as the Executive Director of the Annual CME Unity Summit which includes the denomination’s national training program.
A member of the Mobile District of the Southeast Alabama Region, Dr. Davis is also a member of the Greater Memphis CME Ministers Alliance. He is a Diamond Life member of the NAACP. He is a Life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and serves as Treasurer of the Alpha Delta Lambda Chapter. He is the President of the CME Community Development Corporation, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Zion Community Project for the “Historic” Zion Christian Cemetery and President of his homeowners’ association. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Phillips School of Theology (Atlanta, GA) and is an officer of the Board of Trustees of Lane College (Jackson, TN) and Paine College (Augusta, GA). He is a former officer of the Board of Trustees of Miles College (Birmingham, AL) and of Texas College (Tyler, TX). Additionally, he is a past President of the Association of Black Methodist General Officers which represents the AME, AME Zion and CME Churches.
He is one of the regular teachers of the Men’s Bible Class in the Sunday School of the Greenwood CME Church in Memphis, TN where he also serves as an Associate to the Pastor.
Dr. Davis has three daughters (Tyrena, Monette, Natalie), one granddaughter (Arnesha LaShay) and is married to Janice, his wife and loving help mate of nearly 30 years. The Davises also sponsor a World Vision child (Mary) in Uganda.
